About the picture
The Makaya Season begins on December 21 and ends on January 6, it coincides with the winter solstice which is December 21. Makaya in the Kikongo language of the African civilization of the Bantu means "Leaves".
Makaya is the festival of purification by leaves. During this season, houses and sacred places are cleaned with fresh green leaves, families take a purifying bath to welcome the new year. This bath is used to expiate negative energies and attract positive energies for the new year. In Voodoo the Priests bless during this season all the leaves which will be used to treat illnesses and ward off evil spirits.
